SPONSOR HIGHLIGHT
Kristie and Greg Smith

Since joining the Guild in 2003, Kristie Smith has been an active and dedicated volunteer, serving in numerous roles over the years. Throughout her involvement, her husband, Greg Smith, has been an enthusiastic and steadfast supporter—helping with the Presentation Ball set, attending Guild fundraisers, and graciously hosting numerous Guild events in their home. The Guild has enriched their lives with lasting friendships, and this year they are pleased to serve as Guild sponsors in honor of their dear friends, Laura and Robert Green.

Kristie and Greg moved to North Carolina from Wisconsin when Greg completed his Anesthesiology residency at UNC. They settled in Greensboro in 1982 when Greg began his practice at Moses Cone Hospital. Greg retired in 2016 and has continued to wholeheartedly support Kristie’s volunteer commitments.

Kristie has served the Guild in many leadership capacities, including Vice President for Education, Secretary, Editor of The Guild Horn, and Co-Chair, with Laura Green, of the 2015 Fall Fundraiser at historic Blandwood. She was honored to receive the Golden Note Award in 2024. After their daughters were Symphony Debutantes in 2007 and 2009, Kristie became active with the Presentation Ball Committee, ultimately chairing the Ball in 2012 and serving as Honorary Chair in 2023.

Kristie and Greg are the parents of three married adult children—Eric, Andrea, and Corinne. Family has always been the heart of their lives, and today they happily spend their free time keeping up with their eight grandchildren, ranging in age from two to ten.

SPONSOR HIGHLIGHT
Laura and Robert Green

For Symphony Guild sponsors Laura and Robert Green, support of the GSO and the Guild is a way of life, involving significant commitments of time, talent and treasure. For nearly two decades, this dynamic duo has provided stability and direction through economic challenges, a global pandemic, and the construction and opening of the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts.

During his tenure as GSO Board Chair, Robert’s leadership was transformative. He brought a strong, proven business model to his role and incorporated fund development, strategic planning, marketing and public relations, and community engagement to his master plan. Under his leadership, the GSO was well on its way to becoming the People’s Orchestra, reflecting the soul and essence of the community it serves.

Laura joined the Guild in 2006 after their oldest daughter Elizabeth Lane participated as a Symphony Debutante and immediately put her talents into action. She served as a Board member for 13 years, as Presentation Ball Chair, and as Guild President–working with an experienced leadership team to launch our signature fundraiser, A Notable Night, and during her tenure, raised the most funds in the Guild’s 60-year history in support of the GSO. Following in her husband’s footsteps, she also served as GSO Board Chair and was instrumental in selecting the new Music Director for the Orchestra, in establishing more innovative programming to appeal to a more diverse audience, and in working on the new rehearsal space in honor of Marilyn and Dean Green.

Together, the power couple was honored in 2024 with the Barbara Cone Award, the Guild’s highest honor. Their lasting legacy will be celebrated for generations to come.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Volunteers Needed—Elementary Concerts Coming Soon

Each March, all third, fourth, and seventh-grade students in the Piedmont region experience the magic of live orchestral music through a dynamic performance by the full Greensboro Symphony. These Elementary School Concerts serve over 18,000 students from Guilford, Rockingham, Randolph, and Alamance Counties, as well as private school, homeschool, and out-of-county students.

This event is one of the Guild’s greatest opportunities to give back—a chance to inspire young minds and foster a lifelong love of music and the arts.

We need volunteers from 8am to 1pm at the Tanger Center on March 24, 25, 26, and 27 to help make these concerts a success!

Even if you can only help for one day, your support makes a huge difference. Sign up today via the button below!

EVENT RECAPS

Greensboro Symphony Presentation Ball

The Greensboro Symphony Guild’s 2025 Debutante holiday season was a joyful celebration of three wonderful events honoring tradition, service, and the music that brings our community together.

The traditional Debutante Holiday Tea was held at Starmount Country Club on November 28th, featuring live piano music by Young Steinway Artist Michael Drusdow.

The season also included the Debutantes’ Philanthropy event which focused on recognizing the Greensboro Symphony musicians and the Symphony Guild Ball Steering Committee, highlighted by the Debutantes boxing homemade cookies that were beautifully presented on Sunday, December 14th at the Dean and Marilyn Green Rehearsal Hall.

The festivities culminated in the fabulous 2025 Symphony Guild Debutantes Presentation Ball, held at Grandover Resort and Spa on December 28th.
